Desk and drafting table for small spaces
A foray into the fine-art of furniture making, this project aimed to give students experience with the intricacies and attention-to-detail required to execute the design and construction of a piece of furniture. The dimensions of the design are intended to fit into small spaces utilized by the up-and-coming designer working in a large city. The upper shelf provides users with a space to store belongings such as books or drawing instruments, or be the home of a desktop monitor or iMac computer. The larger lower surface provides space for drafting, writing, and design work.
Production Process
The final chosen design used oak for the drafting and working surface and cherry for the shelf surface. Oak provides a durable working surface due to its hardness and durability and cherry was chosen for the eye-level surface because it will gain aesthetic character over time. For the legs and shelf support, mirror-finished stainless steel tubing was used, providing the desk with a mid-century modern feel.
